Following on from the announcement of the cracking of the Zodiac cipher and in response to a number of inquiries from the US and elsewhere, here is a summation and links to the series of posts that appear on this blog covering the discovery of the hidden Somerton Man code.
The bottom line is that both Alf and Jess were involved, the Somerton Man carried a slip of paper that contained the same type of code as used on the main code page, in the Boxall verse 70 inscription page, and the title page from that same book.

This is a copy of the REDDIT post on the subject:
The Somerton Man code was actually cracked in late June 2020. It was a concealed code and the cipher used was a Hill cipher.
The actual reveal is quite impressive; it is very clear coding.
The site at tamamshud.blogspot.com shows exactly how it was uncovered and gives the precise methodology so that anyone can test it for themselves. There is a PowerPoint tutorial that walks through the process.
Essentially, the code WAS hidden beneath the letters, the crossed-out lines, and the two crossed lines in the middle of the page as well as the flourish marks and stains at the top left and right of the page.
A known SOE code (SOE: Special Operations Executive, British Intelligence) concealment technique was used, it was called 'Ink H' found in an SOE manual from WW2. The method used ink to write the individual letters and then a fine pencil to insert micro letters within each of the inked letters and markings. Optionally they could add another layer of ink over the initial letters to prevent detection from the reflective pencil marking of the pencil. It is possible that the 'reflection' is what was seen by the Police or whichever agency was involved when they examined the markings on the back of the book, it's also thought that the markings found were indentations that occurred when, whoever wrote the code, used the back of the book to rest on and the pressure of the pencil on the original page left marks on the page beneath.
The investigation process put forward evidence that the Whitcomb and Tombs Courage and Friendship edition of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam had very different dimensions and aspect ratio to the actual copy of the code page.
Police records show that the back page of the actual book was missing when the book itself was found.
The SOE concealed code had a particular method that they used to 'develop' the hidden message, in those days, in keeping with Tradecraft rules, they used commonly available household bleach. The paper containing the code was immersed in the solution which fairly quickly dissolved the ink but left the pencil markings to be easily read.
Of course, that process wasn't possible in this case because the 'code page' as such, was not available so no Ink and no pencil, just marked over letters and stains. This made the recovery of the hidden code very challenging, but in the end, the method used to develop the concealment was so very simple.
Importantly, the process also discovered evidence and proof of how Alf Boxall and Jess Harkness were connected and involved in the case.
The finding of the code absolutely supports the view that the Somerton Man was involved in Espionage.
The findings were discussed with SA Police and at their request, all files were given to the Major Crime Squad.
MORE TO COME..
There will be more posts in the coming days that show even more proof of Alf and Jess's involvement.

What happens if you print out a larger image of the letters - it probably doesn't work so well I guess. The revealed letters and numbers don't really look like pixels or artefacts - they look like they are really there. But they are not always that easy to see. In photoshop you can convert details of SM code image downloaded from the internet to black and white - when you do this you are offered an "infa red" option and the ability to adjust colour levels and contrast - by lightening it up considerably the micro code becomes visible in places. Playing around with "emboss" filter is helpful too because it gives you a +ve and a -tive image side by side. Tim
ReplyDeleteGlad that you are able to view the micro code. Would be interested to hear exactly what characters are visible using your approach.
DeleteLots of them are visible from the code page e.g. the Q comes out pretty much like your (uv?) image. I haven't tried with the book yet. I assume the infared setting in photoshop is for an image that is aleady an infared image but it seems to help anyway. Tim
ReplyDeleteGiven that the micro code as indentations or possibly even as pencil markings together with the main code was on the back of the book you have to ask why. Perhaps SM was going to give the book to Jessica or she gave it to him. The pocket note together with the location of the body suggests suicide and the discarded book suggests that he was quitting the information exchange. It is unlikely that an assassin would leave it lying around. It also looks as though he was under surveillance (the missing items and surrounding intrigue) which means the appearance of suicide could have been a cover for an assassination or that a suicide itself could have been covered up. A natural death seems unlikely given the pocket note and the book. Jessica's shock on seeing the bust could be an emotional reaction, even of shame, and doesn't mean she didn't already know that SM was dead. Her mentioning that she gave a similar book to Boxall could be an awkward attempt to associate herself with the book in a legitimate way to deflect from being associated with SM's copy which had her phone number. Tim
ReplyDeleteSome food for thought. When it comes to the book, amongst known tradecraft methods were these:
ReplyDelete1. A book placed in full view inside a car whether it's on the dashboard or the back seat, was a signal to organise a meeting.
2. If, as an agent, you were being pursued, one of the tactics was to ditch any evidence in a place from which it could be later retrieved.
I am sure you're aware that there are many scenarios that could be created from this basic evidence.
When it comes to The nurse's reaction to the bust. I wondered whether she saw the face of a man she knew but didn't expect to see? To qualify this as an option, what photographs of the man were published after he was found and of what quality were they?
For those having trouble with the suitcase and its contents, this link to the gallery will show you the images you might be looking for. It includes the 4 ties and the folded zinc plate shown on image from the Littlemore film clip plus the pencil sharpener that everyone seems to have missed. NOTE THE DATE on the gallery page, its 2014:

This is part of the work done over the years by this blog to share with the audience and sadly so often abused by the light weight end of the Somerton Man blog space. The Danetta Code book will have more details.
..the penny dropped yet pete?
ReplyDeleteAn interesting note on the H pencils. They are used for fine detail work and need to be sharpened more often as a result. Such sharp pencils are far more likely to leave indentations on the page beneath the one being written on.
ReplyDeleteHello, I have decrypted the message, as proof you can check the first line
ReplyDeleteis the key TAMAM SHUD written backwards DUHSMAMAT, the encrypted message
talks about various things including that the victim is going to be a
father. I would like to make my discovery public in exchange for
acknowledgment of having decrypted it
Thanks Alexander, it now depends onhow your decrypty might work with the Nihilist cipher, any thoughts?
