'It's as if someone was instructing you on how to turn the combination wheel on a safe and with ear pressed close to its door, you hear the clicks as the dial is rotated and then there’s one final click as the ‘fence’ drops into place and the door swings open...'
It’s good to pause for a day or two now and then. Take time to unshackle your thinking, step back a pace or two, and then ask yourself ‘What do we really have here?’
I did this exercise a while ago and had intended to write about it but then the more recent posts about Australian Military Intelligence and the recruitment of CMF men as agents took pole position.
The process starts with reviewing the evidence to the granular level, jotting down questions as they emerge, and noting the inconsistencies and apparent dualities. Memories of the age-old trap of ‘paralysis by analysis’ paid a visit. Then came the realisation that what was needed was another perspective, some similar components maybe but from a different and more advantageous point on the map. Changing your location gives you an entirely different view and understanding of the 'geography' surrounding the Somerton Man case.

It was when I took that step back and, with the benefit of being immersed in the history of the Somerton Man case with its people, locations, and events, a gap became apparent. Something was missing, something that had been locked away undisturbed for years.
That gap was never better defined and explained than by the acknowledged leading expert on Australia’s political and social history, Professor Phillip Deery, of Melbourne University. His extensive knowledge and understanding of the relevant times leading up to the events on Somerton Beach and beyond shed much-needed light on the significance of the time between 1947 and 1948 with its backdrop of communism, espionage, the Cold War, and the labor movement.

When listening to this ABC podcast, the safe was unlocked and the door swung open.
