THE SOMERTON MAN MYSTERY: ...THE AUSTRALIAN DRONE TESTS 1948...

  ...ADVANCES IN UNMANNED AIRCRAFT
AUSTRALIA 1948...

A good question to ask is, what else was happening in Australia during 1948 that could possibly be of interest to an opposing power?

The photograph above, I believe is of a test area at Fisherman's Bend, Victoria. Whilst this vehicle was under development in Victoria, other work was underway at Woomera with the first steps taken in the design of the Jindivik, an earlier version of which was known as the PIKA .

Other tests using early meteor jets as unmanned target drones had also occurred in 1948 or so I am led to believe. Still looking for some photographs.

How does this relate to the Somerton Man case? We shall see...

For those interested, the first unmanned aircraft were 'flying torpedoes', dating back to 1918. The designers focused not on Radio Controls but on wind speed, wind direction and the number of propeller rotations it would take for an aircraft to reach its target:

  1. For the avid Carl Webb people, I wondered if you had taken time to look at job adverts in 1947 and early 1948 for electrical engineers at Fishermans Bend? There are a few there, ideal work for your man do you think? I am sure they had hostels or organised accommodation for some of their workers.
