....CARL WEBB ARRIVED IN SAN FRANCISCO IN NOVEMBER 1934
ABOARD THE FREIGHTER SS GOLDEN SUN....
The image above is not the Golden Sun, it is an image of the SS Horn Star, we are still looking for the Golden Sun and others from the Oceanic and Oriental Navigation Company, they had a fleet of 13 ships in total which plied across the Pacific. Not all ships serviced Australia, mainly two in fact, the SS Golden Kauri and the SS Golden Coast.
Carl Webb is recorded as landing in San Francisco aboard the Freighter Golden Sun, this ship did not make its first trip to Australia until 1936.
Here's a Trove article link which provides some quite interesting background:

Some great team work led us to this point so many thanks JohnP!
And here is an image of the record of Carl Webb landing in San Francisco. You will note that he is described as English,:
He's about the right age, DOB is shown as 1906.
Well now there's interesting for you! Mr Webb is only 5 foot 8 inches tall. Oops! If anyone was going to find him it was you GC!
ReplyDeleteNo Dai, not just me. It's a group of really good and experienced people. The other thing worth considering is that the Carl Webb we found may or may not be the Carl Webb uncovered by the DNA exercise, but those that made the claim now need to prove that we are wrong.
ReplyDeleteMedia conditioning will have many people thinking that this man can't be THE Carl Webb because at 5' 8" he's too short. Yes, he is shorter than the Somerton Man who was examined by Dr.Dwyer in December 1948. But and it's a big BUT,, we do not as yet have positive proof that the man examined was the man from whom the hair sample was taken. I am not sure that we have an accurate account of where, when and by whom the hair samples used for the DNA analysis were harvested. It's very grey and will remain uncertain until that proof beyond doubt is produced. One aspect has to be the matching of the dental chart found in the exhumed remains with the chart drawn by Dr Dwyer at the time of the autopsy. If there is no match then the situation changes dramatically. The research into this latest 'Carl Webb' continues and the post will be updated as and when we find additional information, hopefully, that will include a photograph of the sailor Carl Webb.
ReplyDeleteWe might add to this, as far as I'm aware, we do not have a description of the man Carl Webb who has been identified by DNA analysis. Early photographs and some assumptions from footy days photographs are not really proof positive. Just too many loose ends.
