The Forensic Scale: How The Stature Gap Between Carl Webb and the Somerton Man Was Mapped

When evaluating a cold case identification, photographic composites and lookalike comparisons tend to dominate the conversation. However, forensic science is fundamentally a discipline of exclusion: if the primary physical metrics conflict beyond biological possibility, the candidate is excluded. In this image we illustrate and substantiate why Carl Webb could not have been the Somerton Man.

Following an earlier analysis of the Webb family records and the primary archival data from the 1948–1949 South Australian Police inquest, this update provides a transparent, step-by-step visual demonstration of the physical height differential between Carl Webb and the man found on Somerton Beach.

(Note on Graphic: The horizontal red dashed line originates from the crown of the 'living' Somerton Man on the far right, extends horizontally across the frame to the left, breaks cleanly where the handwritten red name "Charlie" is written above Carl Webb's head, and continues through to the left margin above Grandpa Augustus Webb.)

The Baseline: The Mortuary Slab vs. Stature in Life

A central question that has been raised is how the Somerton Man’s recorded stature on the mortuary slab translates to a living, standing man:

The Slab Stature (5 ft 11 in Barefoot): At the 1948 autopsy, the body was measured flat on a mortuary slab at precisely 5 ft 11 in (180.3 cm). In forensic pathology, recumbent cadaver measurements routinely exceed standing height in life by 0.5 to 1.5 inches (1.2 to 3.8 cm). When a person lies supine, gravity is removed from the spinal column, the natural curvature of the spine flattens, and the intervertebral discs passively expand. Such measurements must be offset to account for the height of the heels on the shoes being worn and another effect that occurs when a person extends their height.

The Footwear Adjustment (1.0 to 1.25 in): On Somerton Beach, the deceased was found wearing formal leather shoes with stacked heels. A standard men's dress shoe heel from the 1940s adds roughly 1 to 1.25 inches of mechanical lift.

The Effective Dressed Stature: Adding formal dress heels back to his life-height restores his effective standing stature squarely to 5 ft 11 in (180.3 cm).

In the photograph above and in stark contrast, the Webb family group snapshot is of a relaxed family gathering where casual, flat summer footwear (such as canvas sandshoes or plimsolls with a minimal 0.25 to 0.5 inch lift) was the norm. Casual snapshots capture relaxed, un-extended postures, unlike formal police watch-house or military recruit stadiometer measurements.

The Photogrammetric Methodology

To integrate the Somerton Man into the Webb family lineup without introducing visual distortion or arbitrary scaling, the reconstruction relies on three strict photogrammetric rules:

1. Calibration to Known Biological Anchors

The Webb family members have documented heights in primary archival records:

  • Richard (Augustus) Webb: Documented at 5 ft 8 in (68.0 in / 172.7 cm) in official police/custody records.
  • Roy Webb: Documented at 5 ft 8 in (68.0 in / 172.7 cm) in his Australian military enlistment papers.
  • Carl Webb: Calculated through multi-segment anatomical tracking (proportional fingerprinting of cranium, neck, and torso segments calibrated against the manufactured 6.0-inch sports shirt collar constant) to be identical in stature at 5 ft 8 in (68.0 in).

2. Depth Plane Alignment & Scale Ratio

In photographic perspective, scale changes with distance from the lens. Carl Webb stands in the rear row alongside Roy Webb. To evaluate the Somerton Man accurately, he must share this exact depth plane:

Scale Multiplier = 71.0 in (Somerton Man) / 68.0 in (Carl Webb) ≈ 1.0441 (+4.4%)

Every visible anatomical feature—cranial height, shoulder width, and collar structure—is scaled precisely 4.4% larger than Carl's to account for the physical 3-inch differential at an identical distance from the camera lens.

3. The Visual Horizon (The Red Datum Line)

With all figures aligned on the ground plane, the 3-inch difference in physical height translates directly into vertical head clearance. An average human head measures approximately 9 inches from base of chin to crown; thus, a 3-inch gap represents one-third of a full head height.

The red dashed datum line extending from the crown of the Somerton Man passes cleanly over the heads of Augustus, Carl ("Charlie"), and Roy. It provides an immediate, unyielding visual reference: a 5'11" athletic male stands head-and-shoulders above a family grouping whose male members uniformly stood at 5'8".

The image below is not as accurate as the image at the top of the page. It is an AI generated image to demonstrate how the group may have looked from different camera angles. Specificxally, my intention was to show the position of Roy Webb in relation to Carl, they are almost but not quite alongside each other. You will notice that the AI has made Carl look taller than Roy as he is now closer to the camera lens in the left image and vice versa for the right hand side image.

Hi
Welcome to the Tamam Shud Blog, widely regarded as the leading and most trusted fact and evidence-based blog on the Somerton Man case. We do not collect your login or address details

  1. At some time in the next day or two, we will hit a milestone for the blog when we pass the 1.5 million page views. To explain a little about Google stats on blogger, a visitor to the site may view multiple pages, so our 1.5 million page views needs to be divided by the average number of page views per visit and that currently sits around 3 pages per visit,To qualify that even further, we have a good number of repeat visitors, they visit multiple times. My best guesstimate is that when it all boils down, we hva]ave had around 235000 individual visitors since our first day back in January 2013. The current numbers for individual visitors per month is around 7000. Our stats are dependant on the activities of some of the large international blogs and forums, you can’t really forecast for those influences. I remain very grateful to our loyal followers, and before too long there will be the announcement of the publish date! Thanks to all!

  2. I have added a new image to this post, it is AI generated and shows the group from two angles which more clearly show the relative positions of each member of the group.
