This blog undertook an intensive review and examination of the 'Carl Webb is The Somerton Man' Claim and the outcome has shown the opposite, no evidence was found to support that claim.
The evidence as such was gathered from all of the publicly available published materials including statements by Professor Abbott and Dr Colleen Fitzpatrick, and the IEEE Spectrum Magazine article written by Professor Abbott. Each aspect of the claim was reviewed and can be found in the post previous to this, you can read the full detail here:

In essence what was found was that a series of press releases, TV appearances, radio interviews and magazine articles were launched without any substantiating documentation. Don't get me wrong, there was documentation and lots of it but none of it could be viewed as being credible evidence that conformed to the strict DNA protocols required by forensic science.
The linked post above, gives you access to the various links and you will be able to test out what's been put forward here.
It is telling that, to the best of my knowledge, no formal Academic article on the subject has been published by Professor Abbott and no Peer Review has been made of the claims.
The Question now is, where to from here? From the perspective of this blog, the finding of the man's body on Somerton Beach on December 1st 1948, whilst a sad and mysterious event, it was only the tip of the iceberg. The underlying story goes far deeper, and as one person famously suggested, far higher than you would think.
What events and circumstances existed both within Australia and Overseas, that could possibly have led or contributed to the death of this man and quite possibly others in that same era? Bear in mind that this was a time of great tension between the Soviet Union and the Western Allies, there were major developments underway including technical and political manoeuverings on a scale not seen for decades. International 'incidents' were commonplace and, if anything, were increasing in tempo.
When Soviet teacher Oksana Kasenkina jumped from a 3rd storey window of a New York building attempting to escape Soviet custody, it sparked a chain of events that threatened to spill over into something far worse than an exchange of diplomatic rhetoric. Amongst those events was the impending departure of the Soviet Ship the Pobeda which in its turn only increased the near boiling temperature between the Soviets and the Russians. That particular incident has been covered in earlier posts here on this blog.
In answer to the question, 'Where to from here?' , it could be that International tensions and associated events could have contributed to the death of the man on Somerton Beach and so in the coming weeks this blog will be spending time reviewing some of those events and the people involved.

It's a fascinating read, it's odd that there's no trace of a scholarly article from the Professor. Wouldn't mind a read up on a similar case if there's one around.
ReplyDeleteSo somerton man not solved yet mister.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely not solved yet. The Carl Webb claim was flawed from the outset. Personally I am not at all sure that the man will ever be identified, we may never know who he was but I think we will know what he was.
