Pm the left is the young Carl Webb as per the ABC TV published image, you'll note that the teeth in this image show a distinct 'overbite' which is similar to the Somerton Man.

In the above image, you can see in the left image an AI version of the middle-aged Carl Webb, and on the right is the 'Live' version of the Somerton Man taken from the post-autopsy photograph.
Comparison 4. AI Young Adult SM with Middle Age SM:
This final image shows an AI version of the Somerton Man. I used an age regressing package to 'wind back' the age of the image on the right. This is the first time an image that represents the Somerton Man as he might have looked in his mid-20s has been published. The image of the younger version of the man shows that he has a dimpled chin, which is not present in the older version. Dimpled chins are quite common and can last a lifetime but not always. In this case, that dimple was created by AI.
SUMMARY
Comparison 1. This the Live version of the Somerton Man appears to show significant likeness and is probably quite accurate in my view.
Comparison 2. Show the young adult (as in mid-20s), Carl Webb, compared to a middle-aged, as in early to mid-40s version of Carl Webb. Again, you can see the resemblance between the two and is probably reasonably accurate.

Proven AI tools have been used to create many of these images, and every effort has been made to ensure that we arrived at a set of images that represented the truth of the matter. I believe we've got the balance right, but we must bear in mind that whilst the AI tools used are proven in the field, AI is still relatively young in terms of applications.
What software did you use for this project.? There seems to be a few packages involved, have you checked any of the images out on tineye?
ReplyDeleteI used a few AI packages as you suggest. Step 1 was to find a good image to video tool, there aren’t that many and I tested a few. In the end I chose VIDU, You need to carefully construct your prompts of course.Then I used MS movie maker to assemble the clips, followed by a good age progression package which didn’t offer precise age selection, I suggest you try a few. Putting the image comparisons together is straightforward if you can afford photoshop that’s one way or there are a number of open source tools like GIMP or Paint.net. You can find lots of free background audio tracks on the web for effects. I did do a few reverse image searches but nothing showed up. Hope this helps.
ReplyDeleteAstonishing images. The LIVE Somerton Man looks especially good. Not as sure about the young middle aged pic of Webb, the chin seems wrong, too narrow. Could do with adjusting. The young Somerton Man is fascinating, looks military even though he is just an AI approximation. An impressive set of pics.
ReplyDeleteA question. Is one reason for the delay in announcing the inquest results because the forensic team and maybe Adelaide University are recreating the man’s features?
