SOMERTON MAN MYSTERY

The Evidence The Facts In Detail In Depth

February 2025, Update

February
2025

In many ways, these past few months have been the busiest since starting the blog in 2013. Not that it was all blog-focused, but much of the time and energy has gone into additional material to submit to the forthcoming inquest and an equal amount of time spent on the book. The plan is that they all come together at the same time! But who knows?

Notable Finds

The Falsifiable W&T Rubaiyat

Some notable moments include the confirmation that the Rubaiyat from which the Somerton Man code page was removed could not have been a Whitcomb  & Tombs version. That conclusion was reached after carefully measuring the size of the code page and finding that it did not match the size of the W& T book. Further, the W&T version suggested having a triangular trademark on the back page. The location of that was measured and again it was not a march. There was also the issue of Detective Brown’s evidence in which he specified that the torn piece of paper bearing the words Tamam Shud had been matched to Collin’s version of the Rubaiyat with a suggestion that it was a dual translation version of the book. I had found a copy of Collin’s version containing Fitzgerald’s first and second editions. The W&T hypothesis has been disproved.

Allan H & a W & T Find

At this point I should mention the excellent work done by Alan H, he had found a W & T copy of the Rubaiyat that did not have a triangular trademark on the back page. It was a good find but we had two issues to resolve, one being the verse that matched the rear of the torn slip and the other more challenging issue of the physical size of the code page being larger and of a different perspective to the W&T version. (I think I have that right Allan, if not please let me know). A great example of some solid research by Alan.

The Collins Rubaiyat

The next note relates to Collin’s version. Because the book contained both first and second editions and the W& T version first mentioned had only the first edition, then the question of Adelaide University's attempts to crack the code was based on the 75 quatrains contained in the first edition while the second edition was not taken into account must arise. The second edition has 110 quatrains with several of the initial 75 quatrains having different wording to those found in the second edition.

CMF Spies

Two CMF ( Citizen Military Force) men were shown as having been engaged by the Australian Military Intelligence based in Adelaide, as field agents infiltrating and investigating the Nazi Party in South Australia during WW2. On researching the Pakie Macdougall case, ( Associated with the George Marshall case) we found that another CMF man had been engaged in ‘Special Duties’ a term often used to describe intelligence operations or activities. This finding supports the view that the Australian Military intelligence employed men from various units to carry out work on their behalf. That would include acting as agents and trainers when the occasion arose. About the two men who infiltrated the Nazi party, I think that both were very 'Courageous'.

Micro Code Tested & Confirmed

It was actually in 2010 that the first instances of unusual markings were spotted on the Somerton Man code page. At that time I was involved in Professor Abbot’s Facebook page, ‘World Search for a Rare Copy of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam’. Others had spotted this apart from myself and the Professor had specifically mentioned the numbers near the lower right-hand corner of the code page. On another page, the Inner Sanctum group spun off from there. It wasn’t too long after that I found the letter Q and adjacent letters contained relatively clear letters and numbers. Most recently I have been involved in extensive independent research which has confirmed the presence of micro-written letters and numbers within the larger letters of the code page, on the Tamam Shud torn piece, and numerous other concealments found in the Alf Boxall Rubaiyat. The detailed findings have been forwarded to SAPOL for their information.

Micro Code Confirmed

What's Next?

As for what happens next, that’s anybody's guess. There are still 4 or 5 active topics under the glass at the moment and of course, the book is a priority.. it will be good to get the inquest behind us although I suspect there may be more questions than answers. There are two I can think of right now and neither have been publicly discussed.
