SOMERTON MAN MYSTERY

The Evidence The Facts In Detail In Depth

A HIDDEN WW2 NETWORK IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA...

A HIDDEN NETWORK
ADELAIDE

The interactive map you see above shows the network of Air Raid Shelters that were constructed throughout Adelaide in 1942.

Not widely known is that the Headquarters of the network was in the basement of the Savings Bank Of South Australia. In all, there were 8 such shelters plus the HQ operation.

These are the locations, at this stage, we don't have the physical street addresses of all of them. What is known is that they were constructed at a high cost in 1942. The Headquarters building is interesting because it wasn't opened until May 1943. It seems that the basement HQ was added during the construction phase, but that needs to be confirmed.

Why is this Network of interest and how could it link to the Somerton Man Mystery? It is because the Savings Bank Of South Australia in those days had among the occupants listed on various floors, both the Attorney General's Office and the South Australian Office of the Commonwealth Investigation Service, the precursor to ASIO.

If you follow this link you will see that we have already made mention of that fact in a much earlier post here:

It is also known that these shelters served other purposes, each was equipped with radio facilities and was staffed around the clock. The Civil Defence organisations were accommodated here as were other agencies. The inference is that these locations could have been used for monitoring purposes. We know that there was a Radio Monitoring installation in Glenelg throughout WW2 but that was focused on international traffic and any localized signals they may have picked up. In fact, there was a message picked up from a Japanese submarine just off Kangaroo Island in the 1940s

The question is, were these locations involved in the monitoring of clandestine radio communications from local sources? It must be stressed at this time that we don't have evidence of that but it is being researched. It seems to be quite a coincidence that the CIS had such a handy resource just a few floors down in the Bank building,

  1. For the troll who is a reasonably regular visitor to this blog. Just to make it very clear, I do not post troll comments and shortly you will see why. As for me I lived and worked in Adelaide for 15 years, I drove an STA bus there for couple of years and then worked for an engineering company. I had an office right next to Star Rubber, they were part of the Clarks Shoes stable of companies. As things improved I had an office in Melbourne Street. My children went to school there and I still have friends there. You have made yourself look rather silly don't you think? But I am not going to leave it there, tomorrow morning I will have another message for you and people like you.
