A new photo for you courtesy of the FB Government Aircraft Factory group.
It's a petrol heads gathering in Melbourne. Quite common in those days of course but this one was different. It was held on the airstrip at Fisherman's Bend mid to late 1940s. A time when many of the activities of the organisations housed at Fisherman's Bend were shrouded in secrecy including CSIR experiments with nuclear Fission. Those experiments and others later led to the removal of hundreds of barrels of contaminated radioactive waste which, in turn, ended up in SA.
I wonder who belonged to the various motor racing and enthusiasts club at Fisherman's Bend in those days. Some direct employees and some who worked for tools and equipment suppliers perhaps.
It's interesting given the hobbies of Jestyn's family. A tenuous link but then aren't most of them?
Maybe worth a bit more digging.
