IMPORTANT FOR ALL RESEARCHERS: TROVE FUNDING DUE TO RUN OUT IN JULY THIS YEAR, PETITION...

EMAIL RECEIVED FRO MICHAEL WOHLTMAN YOUR URGENT ATTENTION IS REQUESTED:

URGENT petition to save TROVE (National Library service digitising newspapers etc)

Dear History Lover,

At present Trove is under threat from closure, with funding for the world-ranked web platform running out in July 2023. The digitised historical newspapers are especially useful for historical research - by professionals and amateurs alike. We can't afford to lose the invaluable resource that is Trove. https://trove.nla.gov.au/

To guarantee Trove has a well-funded long-term future we need our Federal Parliamentarians talking about the immense support for the web platform in Parliament.

Please help by taking a minute to sign this formal Federal Parliamentary e-petition, by 22nd February 2023.  And share it if you can, as widely as possible.

We need our Parliamentarians to see that losing Trove is not an option.

kind regards

Helen Halliday

President

    Cultural Vandalism

I wish to raise the issue that the search engine -Trove is in grave danger of being scrapped by the Federal government.

Trove was launched in December 2009, the bright idea of National Library of Australia staff. It was always seen as a way to bring together collections of wonderful things – especially the digitalisation of all our newspapers.

Trove is an Australian online library database owned by the National Library of Australia in which it holds partnerships with source providers National and State Libraries Australia, an aggregator and service which includes full text documents, digital images, bibliographic and holdings data of items which are not available digitally, and a free faceted-search engine as a discovery tool.

Trove provides a wonderful tool for authors, researchers, high school and tertiary students and importantly the general public.

Why does the government continue to attack public assets like Trove. Governments need to stop attacking valuable community services like libraries’, archives and now Trove. Theses public goods have always been at the heart of the communities they serve, providing access to huge resources of information and knowledge.

Let us not forget the huge digital divide in our communities.

This is really important as our history needs to be saved for future generations.

This is a public good that serves many people and communities.

We can’t afford to lose this invaluable resource that is Trove. https://trove.nla.gov.au/

Please sign the e-petition, by going to Trove- Petition EN4747 - Fully fund Trove

Contact your local Federal MP and register your concerns

  2. Done. I can't wait to see newspapers and journals post 1954 digitised. Hoping that NAA doesn't become pay per view like the UK National Archives either. Although I suspect NAA are dragging their feet with digitisation to rope in more people paying them to digitise records.
