THE SOMERTON MAN MYSTERY, THE CODE PAGE BEFORE IT WAS INKED OVER, PART 2, CLOSEUPS

'The Somerton Man Mystery, using a new technique, a secret hidden code has been revealed..'

Microcode Revealed In Crossed Lines

Above is the Crossed lines image but this time rotated. It looks to me that most of the micro written letters and numbers may have been written from the 'top' of the code page and is somewhat easier to read from this view.

Lastly, the image of the crossed lines is again rotated but a pale yellow filter has been applied which enhances the visibility of the microcode.

The Journey

It has been a really challenging journey with a number of false starts. Attempts that at first produced promising results fell by the wayside. The methods used to recover and reveal the code were getting more and more complex, oblique lighting took us part of the way but it was always difficult to get precisely the right angles and intensity of light. UV light was tried with some results but again never quite right. Next was Infrared, which showed much more promise, it was followed by the use of a particular kind of paper, bleed proof. We were almost there but ie needed something extra to not only simplify the process but also produce a far clearer result.

We had to find a way that would somehow remove that upper layer of ink which was put in place by an unnamed agency as a way of concealing what really lay beneath the larger letters on the code page.

The news is that the method has now been found. We can reveal at least 85% of the until now, hidden microcode.

What does that mean for the Somerton Man case? It means that someone who had specific knowledge and skill in the art of 'STEGANOGRAPHY', a tradecraft technique use in clandestine communications, wrote the microcode on the code page. It is also thought here that the same person may have been responsible for the microcode found in the Boxall copy of the Rubaiyat, the one that contains the inscription signed off by a person by the name of 'JESTYN'.

The fascinating Somerton Man Mystery, using this new technique, has revealed a hidden secret code..

Perhaps most importantly, we should now be able to transcribe all of the microcode from each letter and from each line that was marked over.

What we cannot say at this stage with any certainty, is that the microcode is in fact a 'code' and if it is, what kind of code is it? At least there's a good starting point we have access to some WW2 codes for example but we may come up against the possible use of a one-time pad as mentioned in the previous post on this subject. That was the one that included a soundtrack from a numbers station.

Some background

Getting the code page to the stage where we are now has taken more than 7 years, in fact this effort started in the days of the University of Adelaide Facebook page then known as 'The World Search For a Rare Copy of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam'.

For a number of reasons, a small group of members from that page decided to break away and form their own, more sharply focused group. That group was known as The Inner Sanctum and it was a private group, membership was by invitation only. Whilst we were only small in number, we had some very fine minds involved with many years of experience behind them.

I acknowledge here that much of the early work, including confirmation of the presence of micro written letters and numbers, came about as a result of the efforts of that group. One person in particular made an astonishing discovery of extremely tiny letters within one of the larger letters on the code page. I will not name that person without her permission but I publicly acknowledge the work she did.

  1. Pete, regarding Indented writing recovery methods and the orientation of an image, mirror photography was around in those days as were other methods that would effectively 'flip' a photographs orientation. I suppose, to put it simply, you could just hold the photo you have put online and hold it in front of a mirror.

This of course, is assuming that the indentation was done onto the inner side of the back page but there is nothing confirms that. We don't know for sure that the book popularly shown as the one from which the code page came is in fact the original book. My earlier post on that demonstrates some of the inconsistencies related to the aspect ration and physical dimensions of the code page itself and a copy of the Whitcombe and Tombs book.

What we know for sure is that there is a code page, that, according to the conversation I had with Gerry Feltus, the code page was made up of indented writing and that the image was turned negative as part of the process. I respectfully suggest that you think the latter phrase through carefully.

We also know for certain that there is indeed micro written code with the letters, and the lines and the 'stained' areas above the larger written letters on the code page.

I hope this helps, take care of yourself.
