...There will be more images added to this post but for now, you should be able to see, with reasonable clarity, that the ear shape of Carl Webb is markedly different from that of the Somerton Man. In fact, in this photograph, we also get a better view of Carl's right ear which, as you will see from photographs I will post later, is also totally different from that of the Somerton Man...
This latest photograph is from the second of the WebFamily photos. Using some very smart AI image recovery and enhancement tools including Vance, this is the best image from the Webb Family Gathering group. Even in this black-and-white image you can see that his face is well-tanned.
At this point in time what do we have?
ReplyDelete1. We have demonstrated the difference between the left of the Somerton Man and that of Carl/Charles Webb. The conclusion is that Carl is not the Somerton Man.
2. We have discussed the height of Charles Webb and found that, from photographs he was approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall, This is 3 inches shorter than the Somerton Man which adds to the evidence that Carl was not the Somerton Man
3. In earlier posts we showed images of crew list documents from the SS Golden Sun that have a C.Webb, 'English' Nationality born in 1905/06 listed on the Alien Crew members form. This C Webb was 5 feet 8 inches tall and that in 1934 he had 11 years of service.
4. The photographs we have posted here, AI enhanced, show that Carl/Charles Webb in the late 1920s had blond hair compared to his younger photograph which had darker coloured hair. Car's hair colour could only have change to blond by the actions of the Sun and Salt air combined. The same conditions that Able Seaman C Webb would have experienced in what was his approximate 7 years of service sailing numerous times across the Pacific Ocean through the 1920s
5. We now await the arrival of a response from US records that will show whether the 5 feet 8 inches tall Able Seaman C Webb was Carl Webb born in Footscray, Victoria in 1905.
OK, I agree with most of what you're saying. But it does depend on the crew list confirmation. I get the height and age thing.
ReplyDeleteExactly, we have the evidence in the photographs that show the clear difference in the shape of the ear which means Carl is not the Somerton Man, we have evidence which is not as firm as I would like that indicates his height to be around 5 feet 8 inches which means again that Carl cannot be the Somerton Man. The Ships records may or may not show that this was the same C Webb.
DeleteThe reason why Charley is standing at the top of the big group of family and friends is because he had just returned from what was probably 5 or more years at sea. It was a welcome home party for Charlie.
ReplyDeleteA good possibility, ideally we get confirmation from the family, a letter or a note, perhaps even a bill from the photographer?
DeleteThe evidence of the ears alone is strong enough to discount Carl Webb being the Somerton Man, it's just not possible. The Crew List when and if it turns up will be additional confirmation if it is the same C Webb.
ReplyDeleteThe question now is just how did Carl's hair sample get to be in the plaster bust? Was their another body as suggested by Paul Lawson's diary entry? Did the sample come from one of the Detectives detailed to help Paul in making the bust? If it was another body, where did he come from and how did he die? I have two sets of records that contain details of all sudden deaths in SA during 1948 and 1949 with the causes. Possibly an answer will be found in those records.
On the subject of records, I wonder if anyone ever followed up on the Apprenticeship possibility for young Carl in Victoria?
