SOMERTON MAN MYSTERY

The Evidence The Facts In Detail In Depth

SOMERTON MAN MYSTERY: 63 BROMBY STREET, THE WEBB MARITAL HOME, CONVENIENTLY LOCATED? & THE RED POINT TOOL COMPANY>>INTERACTIVE MAP....

....63 BROMBY STREET, SOUTH YARRA

GOOGLE STREET VIEW...

The interactive, 'Street View' map above is of the Carl Webb Marital home, or rather this was a property that was divided into apartments at the time I believe, and Carl and his wife lived in one of them.

Talking with one of the team, there were 4 apartments in 63 Bromby Street. As you look at the front of the house you can see that there are 2 small balconies and 2 screen doors on the upper level.

On the issue of telephone numbers, it was quite common in days past for accommodation such as this to have a shared telephone between a number of apartment owners or renters. This would probably have been a payphone.

Of interest is the fact that this building backed onto a major Intelligence organisation building in the 1940s.

RED POINT TOOL COMPANY
66 ST.JOHN STREET, WINDSOR

The Street View Map above shows the premises of the Red Point Tool Company in Windsor, where Carl Webb worked until 1946 or possibly 1947. The company was owned by William Sher, a close relative of Tibor Kaldor, the man who was also found dead in Adelaide just 2 weeks after the discovery of the man on the beach at Somerton.

  1. I have mapped fourteen WWII intelligence operations sites within 20 minutes walk from Bromby Street but haven't found any tangible links to the Webbs. The only partial link to signals intelligence I found was to a 1950s associate of Sher's who was involved in WWI and post WWI radio unit work (with an occupational exemption from WWII service). I wondered whether Sher could have been involved in making and modifying signals intelligence equipment for Querre et al at Airlie, but Sher's German background may have precluded this... I note that most advertising for Red Point is post war. The Oz at War site has excellent information on WWII signals intelligence sites and operations in Melbourne.
