SOMERTON MAN MYSTERY

The Evidence The Facts In Detail In Depth

THE SOMERTON MAN: THE HAY BANKNOTES AND GEORGE ADAMS TELTSCHER, DESCENDANT OF US PRESIDENT JOHN ADAMS (See comments)

GEORGE ADAMS - TELTSCHER

....A big vote of thanks to Pete Davo for finding this photograph of George.Adams -Teltscher, the man who designed the now-famous Hay Internment Camp Banknotes. These notes contained the same micro writing technique found on the Somerton Man Code Page, The Tamam Shud 'torn slip', and within the Boxall Rubaiyat as per the previous post.

You can read Pete Davo's Geni entry here...

The information on the GENI page has a small error. The code found in Tibor Kaldor's last note was an Acrostic code that spelled out the name DANETTA.

Pete rightly raises the question, was George Teltscher in any way related to the Somerton Man? It does appear that George was related to former US Founding Father and politician, Samuel Adams

As you can see, we have the evidence and we can clearly prove the relationship between the Hay notes and the Boxall Rubaiyat. The next links are between the above, the Somerton Man Code page, and the TAMAM SHUD torn slip as per the previous posts.

  1. Just curious…Pete mentioned in the comments on your previous post that the Somerton man was reported to be related to the Adams family in the US. Is that in your blog? I don’t recall reading that.

    1. Hi Trina, Pete and I have had a number of offline discussions on a range of subjects over the years. The research that I did in the distant past, showed that George's mother was American and her name was Adams and George's middle name is ADAMs. I 'think' that she was related to Sam Adams, a US Founding Father but not a president. Hope this helps.

    2. Amendment, 'she may have been related to Sam Adams. Same family name and area of Massachusetts.

  3. Pedro, that made me smile! It was many years ago when I first heard that word used.

You're right it would be very appropriately applied to commenters on a certain UK based blog in the SM space known for its trolls and boorish behaviour. I can almost hear them scrambling for their well thumbed dictionaries :)

  5. Yes thank you. I’m an American, so it piqued my interest that the Somerton man could possibly be related to a US president. I knew there were two Adams who were presidents and I thought they were father and son, but I looked it up to be sure. Samuel Adams was a second cousin to John Adams. I also read an article from 2016 that the possible granddaughter of the Somerton man had some genetic ties to Native Americans and president Thomas Jefferson (not sure how accurate that is).

    1. Thanks Trina, Thanks for the comment, are you saying that there is a link between George Adams Teltscher and a US President or us it more correct to say that he was possibly related to Samuel Adams? Gould you advise us of your detailed findings?

With regards to the granddaughter of the nurse, it appears that she has now been directly linked to the nurses husband, Prosper.

My view is that the nurse was working with Australian military intelligence via the Army Lieutenant Alf Boxall as is proven by the code found in the book that she gave him. I think it likely that she had infiltrated the Communist Party in Sydney at that time.

Re the US, I have two US grandchildren, they live in Arizona.

      Delete
  6. That’s interesting about the granddaughter’s paternity.
If you look at Wikipedia.org/Adams political family, it gives the genealogy of the Adams family from the first immigrants from England (Of course with Wikipedia there could always be errors). It gives more than you probably ever wanted to know about the family tree🙂. Samuel Adams was a second cousin to the second US president, John Adams. So if George Adams Teltscher was related to Samuel Adams it looks like he would have been related to two US presidents.
I have some relatives who live in the California desert. My dad usually goes to visit them over Thanksgiving (much better time than in the summer!)

    1. Thanks again Trina, good information, I like the way you substantiate he information. For those interested you can find the Adams Political family tree here:

PeteDavo, can you follow this one up please?

Not sure where this may lead to, but it is an interesting and unexpected find, George Adams Teltscher most certainly links to the case primarily because of his design of the Hay Banknotes which incorporated the same micro writing techniques as found in the Code page, the torn slip and the Boxall Rubaiyat. Further, George on his return to England, went to work for British Military in 1942, it was in 1943 that the same military released a manual which contained details of a technique known as 'INK H', a method that hid writing within writing as per the design of the Hay Banknotes and the codes found in the Somerton Man case.

  7. Well John, This blog deals in facts and evidence and if you knew about chain of evidence, you would know that in order for Mounted Constable Knights pointing out a body to Jimmy Durham to be valid, he in turn would have had someone identify the body in the morgue to him as that of the man found on Somerton Beach. Do you have a record of that event? Without that record, there would be no continuity in the apparent chain of evidence and thus, according to the needs of maintaining the chain of evidence, MC Knight was not in a position to give a valid identification to Jimmy Durham.

Look again at Paul Lawson's statement in the inquest document, where again there was no valid identification. in Mr. Lawson's words ' I went to the city mortuary with Mt. Cowan, (Overwritten 'Detective Brown') And he pointed out a body to me'.

In practice, the documented audit trail or chain of evidence would have been handed to the coroner to confirm that the chain was intact. There is no such document in the Somerton Man case

With regards to your latest comment, I have found that when a paragraph starts with words like 'As far as we can reasonably tell...' then what follows is not substantiated by evidence. Thus your words are likely to be generalities supported by newspaper articles and that does not constitute evidence.

Take good care of yourself John and please get some help.

  8. His mum is a direct descendant of a Deacon Joseph Adams.

Here is comment of his Geni.com profile. Authorities differ on the father of Deacon Joseph Adams. Cutter claims, "Martha (Adams) Tufts is a descendant of Joseph Adams, who married:

    1. Abigail, daughter of Deacon Gregory and Margaret (Paddy) Baxter, November 26, 1650.

    2. Their son, Joseph Adams, Sr., was born December 25, 1654.

    He Married first. February 20, 1682, Mary Chapin, born August 27, 1662, died June 14, 1687;

Married second, 1687, Hannah, born June 22, 1667, died October 4, 1705, daughter of John and Ruth (Alden) Bass, and sister of Joseph Bass. Ruth (Alden) Bass was daughter of John and Priscilla ( Mullens) Alden.

Married third. Elizabeth Hobart, daughter of Caleb Hobart. She lies in the old burying ground at Quincy, by the side of her husband, who was grandfather of President John Adams."

(Since Deacon Joseph was born in 1715, he would have been the son of Elizabeth Hobart in this version.) But Cutter acknowledges that the relationships represented in this tree may also be valid. " For many years he was deacon of the church in Menotomy, now Arlington, and Selectman four years." " When her youngest child was eighteen days old. Mrs. Adams was driven from her home by the British troops on their return from Lexington, and the house was set on fire, but the flames were extinguished before much damage resulte.d" History of Cambridge, Mass., p. 473. " When the marauding troops broke into deacon Adams' house and seized the communion service of the Menotomy Church, little Joel, the nine year old child of the family, cried out in horror: ' Don't you touch them 'ere things! Daddy'll lick you if you do!' Undeterred by this amazing menace, the bold grenadiers carried away the sacramental vessels and sold them to a Boston silversmith, from whom they afterwards passed back into the possession of the church, where they are still in use." —Boston Sunday Herald, Aug. 2,1885. 1. Many thanks Pete, so, if I have read this correctly, George Adams Teltscher, by virtue of his mother's relationship to Deacon Joseph Adams, was directly related to President John Adams.

That's quite a find, great work! The issue now of course will be how and if this has any bearing on the Somerton Man case. That's not meant to lessen the importance of the find in any way. We simply do not know as yet the significance of what you've uncovered.

We can say that George was connected to the Somerton Man case via the use of micro codes. It is also known, interestingly, that President John Adams developed a number of codes himself.

  10. One of his relatives on his father's side of the family married a Sigmund Schön.
    https://www.geni.com/people/Hedwig-Sch%C3%B6n/6000000012388546017

I'll be looking to see if that's connected to Tibor Kaldor's biological father's family.

  11. That's interesting. Tibor's father was a Julius Schoen or Schon. Here's the post:

  12. Whilst I'm not having much luck identifying Sigmund's lineage as yet, I'll note that young Tibor adopted his stepfather's surname around the time that his widowed mother had moved to Vienna and remarried. I note that she was living in the same area of Vienna that George Adams family had resided in when Tibor's mum was deported to the Ghetto where she later died.
George had joined the Spanish civil war and was residing in London when deported along with Tibor on the Dunera.
Make of this what you will, but they appear to met at least, sometime prior to being deported to NSW.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Thanks Pete, its good information. A thought:
Can you trace George's movements as in when did he leave Vienna and which route he took to reach the UK? Was he in Spain through until 39 or did he return to Vienna? Tibor travelled by Italy, Switzerland and France before making his way to London. Perhaps even an address or two? I wonder whether George did voluntary work as did Tibor?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Don't know how this blends with your research Pete Davo. Seems that at the time of his arrest as an 'Enemy Alien' in June 1940, George resided in Cadogan Gardens, a very upmarket location. Tibor Kaldor on the other hand was living in an accommodation house in Parliament Hill some 6 miles North of George's residence a 35 minute bus ride in those days and probably quicker by tube although I am not sure of the tube timetables.

Tobor had signed on to the Pioneer Corp in May 1940 only to be arrested in June and held for deportation on the Dunera. On that ship he would have been in good company including George Teltscher.

Tibor, being Jewish, though not Orthodox, may not have spent that much time with George who was in fact Lutheran. That doesn't preclude the two men knowing each other of course.

Here's the timeline for George during 1941:

    1. 6th May 1941 marched in to Tatura camp in Victoria from Hay internment
    camp

    2. On 28th May 1941, George is taken, under escort to Sydney

    3. On the 19th June, George was marched out of Liverpool barracks and on that same day he boarded the THEMISTOCLES although the records show that the THEMISTOCLES left Sydney and travelled via New Zealand, the Panama Canal and Halifax, Nova Scotia before joining the convoy HX 140 for the run to Liverpool UK arriving there on 6th August 1941.

At the time it was most unusual for the Americans to allow any 'Enemy Aliens' to travel through the Panama Canal.

  15. Considering the visit to Adelaide by Tania Teppema, later Hemblys-Scales, to visit her aunt in the weeks before Somerton Man's death. Tania is already known to be overtly providing her father and Netherlands East Indies Foreign Intelligence Service with Intel on Chifley's dealings over Indonesian Independence.
A question arises over whether Australian Government was actively destabilising Dutch efforts to regain control in Indonesia post war?

This is interesting. I wonder who was making the currency plates at the CBA?
    From>
    http://davidklinger.blogspot.com/2006/06/?m=1

Counterfeit Japanese Invasion Money (JIM) was produced by the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) during WWII ! Evidence of this comes from three letters among a large package of official files (copies) I received from the Senior Archivist, Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA). The RBA is the successor to the CBA, which operated during WWII. It also included a note division, which was equivalent to our Bureau of Engraving and Printing.

The first letter was sent from the Netherlands Indies Commission to the Governor, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, on 5 October, 1942:

    "Dear Sir,

In order to effectively prosecute the war against Japan the Government of the Netherlands East Indies considers it essential to have at its disposal supplies of currency similar to that issued by Japan for circulation in the Netherlands East Indies.
The need is urgent and we have to request you to arrange to supply us as soon as they can be printed with the following quantities of notes which resemble as closely as possible the specimen notes handed to your Melbourne manager.

    1/2 Gulden 12,800 pieces
    10 Cents 30,000 pieces
    5 Cents 10,000 pieces
    1 Cent 10,000 pieces

When completed we would be glad if you would deliver the notes to the order of Dr. R. E. Smits as they may be required by him.

Signed by Dr. J. E. van Hoogstraten, Chief-Commissioner"

The second letter was a simple cover letter from Dr. Smits, Managing Director Javasche Bank to the Governor of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA). It recommended approval of the basic request. But of interest on this letter is a hand written note apparently written by the Governor of the CBA. It reads:
"I saw Mr. Chiffley [finance minister] at Canberra on 30/9/42. I told him of Dr. Smits wishes including his views regarding absolute secrecy. Mr. Chiffley raised no serious objections and he fully appreciated that action of this sort is necessary in war; and that the Axis is already doing what we propose to do. He is satisfied for us to go ahead and he will leave the whole matter in our hands." [Initialed on 5/10/42]

The third letter is proof-positive that the official counterfeits were printed by the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. This letter was sent from the Netherlands Indies Commission to The Manager, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, on 20 January, 1943:

    "Dear Sir,

Referring to our letter dated 5th October 1942 to the Governor of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Sydney, we beg to inform you that our stock of the special notes you have printed for us, is nearly exhausted. This paper has proved to be very useful and we request you to print for us the same quantity as in October.
When completed we should be glad if you would deliver the notes to our commission as they may be required.

Signed: Ch.O. Van der Plas, Chief-Commissioner"

These counterfeit notes were copies of the first of the three series of JIM which were issued by Japan for the Netherlands East Indies (NEI), usually referred to as "Regeering" notes. There is more to follow from the remainder of these files. For example, there is also a discussion in these files, of privately produced JIM counterfeits, also produced in Australia during the war.

  16. I read with some amusement the comments of a known troll regarding the issue mentioned in my previous comment about American sensitivity when it came to their borders and perceived 'Enemy Aliens'. Like many, I have read widely on the issue of the second world war and, like many, I am well aware of the political tensions both internal and external that existed in the US in 1941.

Pro Nazi and full Nazi organisations within the US included the German American Bund, they had a strength of some 40000 in 1939 and were rapidly growing, they were a focus of attention for US Intelligence services.

Internationally the situation with the war in Europe had deteriorated to such an extent that Roosevelt was no longer prepared to stand 'aloof' to the events and accordingly in May 1941 he declared a State of Emergency and formally put the US on a war footing. The relationship between the US and the IK and its allies was extremely strong, enemies of the Allies were enemies of the US.

Around the same time, Roosevelt also delivered $100,000,000 in aid including munitions to China's Chiang Kai Shek.

So, yes, it was unusual for the US to allow those who had just been released from internment in Australia to get close to their borders. They had every reason to be cautious.

The route to the UK via the Panama canal was deemed to be the safer option especially if the cargo and/or passengers being carried were of high value.

Whilst a full on War itself had not been declared, the Intelligence War was well and truly underway and had been since the early 1930s.

JS, my advice to you is to apply your mind. Stop trolling, stop attempting to stalk people, and stop your attention seeking behaviour. You should have learned by now that it just doesn't work, you continually fall short and demonstrate to all your lack of knowledge. You could do so much better if you got your act into gear and made a genuine effort to contribute. I wish you well.

  17. It would appear that the link between George and the events in Adelaide dwell upon styles of codes and microwaving that appear to be similar to what was produced in the Hay banknotes. It may well be that Georges was not the only one that could've taught Somerton Man, Tibor Kaldor or anyone else these techniques, but it is a valid place to start searching for acquaintances in the hope of identifying SM. However this is premised upon the theory that the Rubaiyat found in Adelaide was actually written in by SM.
Tibor's suicide letter though does have a Provence.
Maybe I have it wrong. Maybe SM was also in Adelaide to procure counterfeit documents, and Tibor was the supplier. And just like Stanislaw Kilianski, a failed rendevous was a terminal proposition.
So if SM was a Russian illegal on the run from the NKVD as you theorised, he'd need a temporary safe house and some counterfeit documents to rebirth a new identity & turn him into a legal resident. It would've been either that, or defect and risk being on a hit list for ever, and send your wife and other family to Siberia.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Thanks Pete, Personally I don't believe that SM wrote the code, I think he had the torn piece in his possession but that doesn't mean that he wrote on that either.

Aprt from the Hay Banknotes, the micro code method appears throughout the Boxall Rubaiyat with evidence that Alf wrote the number 70 into the book and it contains a string of numbers and letters. The dividing line between the two pages shown in the image of the Boxall book also contains micro code as does the cursive writing, Jestyn signature and the title page.

From these facts I think we can say that both Alf and Jestyn knew how to write micro code.

Now add to this the fact that SOE produced a manual that described the INK H process of concealing messages. They describe precisely how letters were concealed within larger letters. The date of that manual is 1943 which is after George started work with British Military, late 1941, and before Jestyn presented Alf with the book, 1945. Thus, it is quite possible that Alf and Jestyn had been given a copy of the SOE code manual.

The examples are proven fact, and the method used to recover the code is there for anyone to follow. In case anyone missed it, the image of the two pages can be downloaded from this blog, you simply print it out using any reasonable quality inkjet printer set to best quality and print it on to bleed proof paper. Close examination will show the code, if it is a little dark then use a few drops of lemon juice onto the area you are inspecting, that dissolves any lighter colouring leaving only the darker micro letters and numbers.

I'll put a post together that includes the recovery method, the high res image and the manual.

I agree that Tibor Kaldor very likely had knowledge of the method as did at least one other person, an engraver by trade and an internee at Hay and Tatura.

    A good discussion Pete.

  19. For those interested, I now have the full passenger list for the Derna. It includes those that embarked at Marseille, Aden and Port Said. It is the Port Said list that is quite possibly the most interesting. Followers will recall that the POBEDA passed through Alexandria, the Mediterranean Egyptian Port which is just 260 Klms by road from Port Said.

It is known that the Derna had at least 7 stowaways on board when it arrived in Fremantle. All had their thumbprints taken which were then sent to Canberra.

What we do not have as yet is the passenger disembarkation list for Perth and Melbourne which we could use as comparison. Amongst all the names searched, there is only one Pavel, wouldn't that be something. For now we have to make do with what we have and we can make a start which will include the known list of Internees who returned to the UK in 1941/42 and those that may even have returned in 1945/46.
