The history of this bus may hold a link to Jestyn and a man named Keane, more to come...

UPDATE 12th July

This Mr. Tom Keane was, in 1948, a resident of Hamilton in Victoria, a place where Jestyn was known to have friends and relatives, dates of those friendships are yet to be established. Clive and I are working together on this and you should know that we are being helped a great deal by one of Tom Keane's close relatives. The bus? Tom was a motor mechanic and worked on engines for this type of vehicle. One interesting revealed to us is the fact that whilst Tom Keane is his name, it is his middle name which had always used including in his signature.

Another update due next week.

  2. Thanks to Misca for this information, our Walter Thomas Keane better known as Tom Keane was born in Marrickville NSW in 1913, 2 Union Street.

Not sure how long he resided there so the question remains, did the Keane and Harkness family know each other?

If you have any further information about this please provide links to your sources.

  3. If I understand this, are you saying that there are now two locations, Hamilton and Marrickville, both of which are places where T Keane and Jestyn had close associations?

  4. JAFO, Yes, that's correct, two locations that were common to both Mr. Keane and to Jestyn. At the moment, of course, that link is tenuous but we are still working on it and hope to get further information in the next week or two. Will update this post as soon as we have any further details.

  5. JOHN, cc JAFO, Read your comment with interest and thanks for your input. The reality is that Tempe is and was a suburb within the council area of Marrickville and my understanding is that in the early 1900s Union Street was referred to as being within Marrickville itself. Since that time there have been some adjustment to boundaries. If you have information to the contrary I would be most interested. I hope all is well for you, I enjoy reading your comments :)

  6. John, Just a correction for you. I followed up with Leiachradt library re the history of Marrickville and Tempe. They put the task to one of their researchers and his response was that was part of Marrickville Municipality from the outset, 1830's, and there is nothing that they could find to the contrary, So, sadly your assertion was incorrect. Everyone makes mistakes and that's the way the world works. The issue though, in this case, is that you stated that it was 'downright misleading' in your comment on the CM blog about one of my commenters. That was entirely inappropriate. I respectfully suggest that you take just a little more time to verify your research before making statements like that. For the record, I think you are capable of far better work than that. You can verify what I have said by contacting Gary at Leichhardt Library.

  7. My apologies Johnny Bach, I really hadn't realised how deep your insecurities ran. It does seem that whilst you have the ability to lash out at anyone who criticises you, you are totally unable to accept criticism of your efforts.

You see John when you set out to belittle, demean, denigrate and demonise others, it's symptomatic of deeper issues that you face, what effectively happens is that you project your own failings on to your targets.

I'll give some more thought as to how we might work together to help you through what must be difficult times for you.

In between times I recommend that you should try some deep breathing exercises and perhaps make a start on mindfulness meditation. You'll find it relaxing.

  8. Thanks to Clive, the latest information we have regarding the Hamilton connection is quite interesting. Following up on the initial information that Jestyn had passed away whilst visiting friends in Hamilton in 2007, Clive contacted the Coroners Court in Hamilton to be told that they had no record of such an occurrence. If anyone can confirm the actual place and date of her passing that would be appreciated.

It appears that, at this stage, we don't have a connection for her in the town and so we will hold this story in abeyance until we have an update.
