SOMERTON MAN MYSTERY

The Evidence The Facts In Detail In Depth

THE SOMERTON MAN MYSTERY: A MAP ALWAYS HELPS, 66 ST JOHNS STREET TO 10 THE AVENUE... 4 Minutes....

....66 ST. JOHNS STREET TO
 10 THE AVENUE WINDSOR.
 HOME OF TIBOR KALDOR....

The St John Street address is to the upper left with a red marker
1o The Avenue address is just above this caption. lower right of the map.

The workplace of Carl Webb, Red Point Tool Company to the home address of Tibor Kaldor, just 4 minutes away by car. The foreman at the business stated in the Divorce papers dated 1951, that he hadn't seen Carl for 3 to 4 years.  4 years would have been 1947 when Carl supposedly left the marriage home. Where would he have gone for what appears to be around 12 months before he was found on Somerton beach? That is always assuming that the body on the beach is the body in the grave.

For those not familiar with Tibor Kaldor, he was the man who was found dead in a first floor bedroom of the Victoria Hotel in Hindley Street Adelaide just 2 weeks after the finding of the Somerton Man's body.

What makes Tibor very interesting is that he left a last letter. When the first paragraph of that letter was passed through an online Acrostic decoder, the name DANETTA was found.

Here are some links that provide more information:

Here's a pic of 66 St John Street as it is today, it looks as though it has retained the facades at least of how it may have appeared in the 40s:

And this building is 10 The Avenue, Windsor. I am not certain whether the building you see here was built in the 40s, it certainly looks fairly old but I suspect it may be a late 50s building. It was thought that Tibor stayed at a lodging house but these are apartments/flats Maybe he shared one?  A nice tree-lined area:

ANOTHER MAP:

The map above is of the network of parent and subsidiary stores of parts for the Beaufort Bomber programme at Fishermen's Bend, Melbourne during WW2. This image is courtesy of Mal Crozier of the GAF Facebook page. Mal has an enormous collection of images and knowledge about
Fishermans Bend...

AND JUST ONE MORE MAP:

The map above shows the location of the Beaufort Bomber Subsidiary Store on St Edmonds Road and its distance to St johns Street where Carl Webb is sad to have worked. A 4-minute walk and just a few minutes in a car.

A reasonable question might be 'Did Tibor Work at the Red Point Tool company?' Unless we are extraordinarily lucky, we may never know the answer to that question.

  1. A quick comment, as some wil know, I had planned to take this blog into 'private' status. Since doing that a few days ago, I have had numerous requests to put it back as it was, an open to the public blog. The customer is always right and accordingly, here we are back again.

I do need to let you know that one of the prompts to make the blog private was a spate of phone calls with no one at the other end plus my FB page was hacked as well as my email.

I suspect but don't know for certain that the events may have been linked to the recent Optus hack.

  2. Wilhelm Sher is the name of the owner of the Red Point Tool Company. Wilhelm was also known as Peter William Sher, according to NAA files he was Austrian, Vienna, by birth and there are a number of photographs of the types of electric tools he designed and sold here in Australia. One of the photographs shows a man using a power tool, possibly the image is of Wilhelm.
It is not entirely clear whether Wilhelm was an Internee at some stage. I see in his records that he was listed as a Stateless person in Victoria which suggests that he could have been in an Internment Camp and in Victoria that camp was Tatura. If he was there then he could have known Tibor Kaldor. Will update you on this as and when the information becomes available.

  3. Further information on Wilhelm Sher. His date of birth was 6th November 1902, he arrived in Australia aboard the Oronsay, arriving in Sydney 17th January 1939 along with his wife, Elsa. Obviously he wasn't a Dunera Boy but he may have been interned as an enemy Alien living in Australia. For the record he was naturalised in 1944.

  4. A note for you. Apart from the Dunera Boys who were transported to Australia and interned. There were about 4500 other German Aliens who were interned, mostly in Tatura camp and a lot of them were families.
