The Somerton Man Case. The body of a man found on an Australian beach close to a major Atomic Testing ground, he was probably poisoned, a copy of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam and an unbroken Code page found and associated to him. Set against a Cold War background in 1948, was this man a spy? We think so and this blog focuses on the evidence that was left behind and in some cases missed, the Code page, Dry Cleaning numbers, A Poem and a small, torn piece of paper bearing the words TAMAM SHUD.

Somerton Man: The Code Page Door Opens, Time For A Break!

In these images there is no room for doubt, you cannot achieve the appearance of letters and numbers simply by writing over an indented letter. I truly have tested that and I am 100% confident that what you see is the real deal. 

The big question is this, are we looking at code or just someone filling in time? Is it possible that some of 'code' is real and the rest just to muddy the waters?

One thing is certain, whoever wrote it had direct experience with the British Intelligence Ink H method released in 1942. 

Whilst the code page proper has now been revealed, there is still the question of Verse 70 written by Jestyn for Alf Boxall, it also contains micro-code and detailed images will be posted in the next week or so, time permitting.

The most exciting aspect about this huge breakthrough is that the method used can be readily replicated, anyone can do this as per the method described later in this post. 


Long string of letters but mostly numbers all but completing the full code found on the Q.

What I found interesting is the orientation of both sides of the Q, they were written from the left which indicates to me that the person was not only right handed but very skilled and knowledgeable in the use of micro-writing.









Below, the open end of the two crossed lines showing clear numbers and letters.



You will have to look closely at the crossed lines as highlighted to the right, packed very close in both the upper and lower lines with the lower line also split effectively giving double lines of code.










Below is a clear view of the central area of the crossed lines. Unmistakable letters and numbers packed into the upper line and in the lower line, there appears to be 3 rows of micro written letters and numbers.

Bear in mind that the original size of some of these letters and numbers is below .5 mm.

You should be able to make out the letters and numbers in the highlighted areas and also those in the darker side of the Q is just about visible..

A little dusty to view but some letters and numbers are certainly visible in each of the highlighted areas.


NOTE 1. :
When you click on an image it takes you to the full size version, to view the image at its correct size you should really download it and then adjust the size downwards until you get it into focus.

NOTE 2:
When you have completed the process described below, you should take images of the bleached page. Those images are best taken in sunlight. Once done you should print them out for viewing and adjustment to focus and brightness.


To recover the microcode, the very simple method of bleaching was used. What it means is that anyone is able to recreate what has been done here and hopefully improve on it.

The method is to first download a copy of the code page from the Adelaide University WIKI, here:

Next you will need the following items:

1. 2 X glass plates, around 150 mm X 100 mm, the sort you will find in old photo frames
2. 1 small plastic container large enough to hold the glass plates and around 50mm deep
3. Strong household bleach
4. Copy of the code page
5. Digital camera preferably with a macro lens but not essential

The method is quite straightforward but if you are a student, please do not do this without adult supervision.
1. Clean glass and plastic container
2. Place 1 glass plate in the base of the plastic container
3. Pour strong bleach into the container, enough to cover the glass plate and say another 10mm on top
4. Print out at best quality the copy of the code page that you downloaded from the wiki site
5. Immerse the printed copy of the code page into the strong bleach and on top of the first glass plate
6. Place the second glass plate on top of the immersed code page, there should be a few mm of bleach covering the entire 'sandwich' of glass plates and code page.
7. Leave the container and contents in a cool area away from direct sunlight.
8. Take first close up images of various areas of the code page
9. Revisit the container twice a day and take more pics of areas the code in close-up/macro mode
10. After 24 hours you will notice that the ink on the page is beginning to dissolve
11. Continue the process of taking images twice a day refreshing the bleach every two days by emptying out the old bleach and adding fresh bleach.
12. Set up your computer with a folder for each days worth of images.
13. Using the free download Irfan View image tool plus Paint.net or Gimp, optimise your view of the code in each image.
14. I use 2.5 X reading glasses when viewing the images, you can try various strengths of glasses for this purpose until you find the ones that suit you best.

PLEASE NOTE: This method is now your experiment, you will be able to reproduce the images shown here with details of micro-code. This guarantees that the images here were not in any contrived and are genuine. No markings of any sort have been added to any of these images apart from the red highlighting.

We are close to having sufficient microcode visible for an experienced code person to take this on.  It should be obvious now for even the most sceptical to see that these are not just 'indentations' or marks made by a pen, they are the original code that until now has been hidden in plain sight. For those interested you can find online code breaking tools, Vignere would be a reasonable start and maybe even Playfair?

Due to personal circumstances, I will be taking a break for a while but I will check mail and comments. My original intention was to prove the existence of microcode on the code page and that has now been done.

THE LETTER 'Q" REVEALS A SECRET

The Navy Arrives..





Using an improved recovery technique, it was possible to reveal additional details from the circumference of the letter Q. The string of code opens up what may be the truth behind the code page.

You should be able to see the following: 232X RAN 35 XCA notice the space between each grouping.

The key word in here is RAN, for those who don't know, that stands for Royal Australian Navy. Could this be why the 'code' page was sent to Naval Intelligence in Melbourne and not to the Adelaide Military HQ at Keswick Barracks?

Is it more than coincidence that on December 16th 1948, just a short while after SM's body was found, that HMAS Sydney, Australia's first proper aircraft carrier was commissioned in Devonport? The image to the right is of the Sydney in sea trials in early 1949.

Is it also a coincidence that the letters/numbers LZ155G were found on the code page and that was the registration number for a Sea Vampire, the first jet to land on a sea going aircraft carrier?




Another interesting aspect of this latest find is the different perspective that this places on the XCA group. The Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation used to use the prefix CA for the registration numbers of all aircraft produced by them. Most interestingly, they used the prefix XCA for all experimental aircraft they were developing. Consider the amount of development work to be done on Australian produced aircraft to make them suitable for Carrier operations. If you look closely at the letter Q above you will see just the beginnings of more detail following the group and ahead of the stroke through the Q. That detail may give us an aircraft number although it is too early to be sure. Within a few days we should be able to view the letters/numbers hidden beneath the darker areas of the Q.

Ther are many more images to come that show more details of strings of microcode. Some of those letters are still in the developer process, it takes days for the 'bleaching' process to gradually remove the graduated lighter shades from each letter but the results are much clearer than have achieved earlier. Some look very promising and will be released oevr the course of the next few days to a week.

I think it's fair to say that you will be amazed at the sheer amount of microcode that will eventually be revealed through this work.

I have to end on an apology to Lee! I will still post the comparison images you suggested but this particular image and post really couldn't wait. I hope you understand.

More close up pics with many more to follow, by the end of this week the latest and improved batch will be ready to show. The methods I use are standard and have been substantiated here on this blog. In other words I have been quite readily re create the use of micro writing in a similar size, conceal that writing and then recover it and then write over a scan of it and still be able to reveal it, In addition I have been able to prove that micro writing disguised as it has been in the SM code page, was in fact a known technique used by British Intelligence in WW2, Ink H.

NICK PELLING
Nick has continually refused or been unable to respond to my questions. I asked him for examples to substantiate his claims and he can't do that. I told him that if he can tell the difference between micro writing and pareidolia the we could put it to the test and I offered to set one up, but apparently he is unable and/or unwilling to do that as well.

So in the face of the evidence put forward and substantiated, Nick continues his vendetta against me and the work I do here. I wanted to post a comment here that Nick left on Pete Bowes blog regarding micro writing and a totally incorrect statement he made regarding mental illness.

Here's Nick's comment with my comments within:

Gordon: the only reliable way to tell between pareidolia and microwriting is to have scans of the same underlying image at two different resolutions. 
That's interesting and on what do you base that statement? Have you read it somewhere? Tell us where or is it just another idea you had? There is no such document that I have found although I have found and proven how this was done. It has also been shown that a 400 dpi image contains enough detail to reproduce the same effect as that on the code page. In other words Nick, words without substantiation have no value and you are wrong.
At the higher resolution, the microwriting should resolve into clearer writing: if it does not, it was pareidolia.
Again, where did you get that information from? Substantiate it and how it applies in this case and if you can't then you are wrong again. Here's proposal for you, if you are so certain on this point, then a man with your skill and background should be able to readily demonstrate it, so go ahead, demonstrate it.
If you don’t have access to a higher resolution scan, you cannot differentiate between pareidolia and microwriting. Bleaching printouts, shining UV lights, whatever – none of this helps you.
You have yet again made another bland and uninformed statement apparently in the belief that if you made then it must be true. Unless you substantiate your claims then they have no value. I have proven the ability to create and recover micro writing at 400 DPI. Nick you have proven nothing.
As to the rest of your comment: if the best argument you can muster against people who have specific technical disagreements with your point of view is to accuse them of mental disorders, shame on you.
Nick, this is a particularly unpleasant coment to make. Mental Illness carriues with it a stigma and wrongly so. I have some qualifications in this area and admit that I have been guilty of subscribing to the stigmatisation by failing to be open about my experiences, a form of denial if you will. I have a son, he's in his mid 40's now. Some years ago we worked to gether , we had a successful Technology based business but my son wanted to take off and see the world and learn. He did that and was a project manager for a number of large IT projects in the finance field, in that role he travelled the world, Tokyo, Simgapore, London and more. He was very good at his job.
He became involved with a high flying crowd and soon alcohol and drugs became a big part of his life. His behaviour became erratic, he would anger easily and would often not be in contact for months at a time. He developed narcissistic tendencies and was diagnosed as Bi-Polar. This later progressed into full blown schizophrenia. He lost his job of course and before long he became homeless, he still is and lives on the streets. I don't always no where he is or how he is, not through the lack of trying. There is little real support for people in his position and hwta there is he refuses to accept. As a parent you learn to live with the sadness and pain but if my pain is bad I look at my son and wonder how on earth he deals with his pain which would be so much greater.

Dealing with mental illness is extremely challenging. I have many friends in the same situation and there would be thousands more parents in this and worse positions, I have friends who have lost their children to suicide and their pain must be dreadful.
My comments regarding the behaviours of some were specifically aimed at informing people to try to understand those who talk or behave strangely, to know that these people are dealing with their own personal demons. I gave out some 'marker' information so that people could learn to spot potential problems in others or maybe even in themselves in the hope that it would do some good
Nick, turning the issue of mental illness into a point scoring exercise is beneath contempt. 

Until now I have kept this information to myself and a few trusted people, sometimes that doesn't pay but in the end the more we are open and talk about the issue of mental health, the more we can change the narrative and hopefully the more help will be delivered to those in need.

In Australia we have Lifeline,  you can contact them on 13 11 14 and it's a 24 hour service. Whatever you do don't sit on it, take positive action and take it now.

The image above was one of more than 600 taken over the past two weeks. As you can see their appears to be a name spelt out, DIMAIN. There's more work to be done but this is a valid surname and whilst it's an exciting find, I have to say that given this is an espionage code page, it would be unusual to have a full name spelt out apart from a code name as per the VENONA cables. I have not found that code name as yet. So, caution for now but a very interesting result. Worthy of note that this word as with all other letters in microcode on this page, is in block capitals, that was a standard used by all agencies. 

Will post more as they are processed, you can probably make out markings in the letters above but they're out of focus at the moment.

Another XCA?










On the left above is a close up image of the crossed lines near the X. This was taken after treating the original BW image in a strong bleach solution for approximately 18 hours. The image on the right has been enhanced by adjusting contrast and curve.

In the upper line and a little ahead of the number 3, there appears to be a number 7, it is overlaid on the stroke of the X. The lower line also has what appears to be numbers overlaid, I say that because the number, possibly a 5, is set perpendicular to the X stroke. Fairly safe to assume that the X and its microcode was put in place first.  Whether that has significance, I don't honestly know but maybe sometime in the future, when all of the markings have been uncovered and decoded, we will have the answer to that.

This image below is another one of a number of images I have of the crossed lines, to get to the detail for this image, In this case I used bleaching for 36 hours which removed quantities of lighter ink leaving what we see here. The whole development process is by its very nature dynamic and you need to monitor regularly as inks are stripped gradually away by bleaching. 

You should be able to see the microcode written inside each of the lines. Near the centre of the lower line you can see a there are two sets of microcode one on top of the other.

The image above is the result of 36 hours immersion in bleach, the bleach takes away the lighter shades and ;leaves the darker 'hidden' letters and numbers. I am 100% confident that with time and effort we should be able to recover around 80% of the hidden letters and numbers on the page.

The Letter P & The Dark Area


The above image is of the darkened area that you can see to the top right of the code page. I originally thought that this area was just a stain of some kind but on closer examination it appears that it may have been part of the marking over exercise. In one interview Detective Brown had said that the phone numbers were to the right of the code page, in fact I am almost sure he said the upper right. It would be a good place to hide phone numbers.





This is the first letter P in the third line, You should be able to make out the letters and numbers that follow the curve of the upper poart of the P and some markings in the upright. There are numerous indications of markings in the other letters and the line through.

Please note that I have taken numerous images of these letters and markings from various angles and still get the same result

Just to make it clear for everyone viewing these images. Ink does not magically 'organise' itself into sequences of, almost perfectly aligned, micro letters and numbers when it's applied to the surface of a photograph. It simply does not happen in that way,This work in myview was carried out by an expert in micro-writing. I feel qualified to say that because as some may know, I have made a study of micro writing as both a tradecraft tool and as an art form.

Work of this nature takes a great deal of skill and practice. In turn that means that whoever it was that created the examples shown here, be it Jestyn, Alf Boxall, SM or maybe someone else entirely, knew exactly how to create and arrange the micro code. Not only has this work been done to a high degree of skill, it has been expertly concealed and disguised to ensure that it would not be readily discovered. Disguising the code by hiding it within the outlines of larger letters is masterful.

SUCCESS!

This has taken a long time but at last I now understand how to better uncover the hidden micro code beneath the larger letters on the code page. A big vote of thank to all those who have stayed with me and encouraged me all the way. In all fairness, even those who doubted also encouraged me in their own way :)

Below are some selected images from this series that I trust you will be able to view reasonably well.


This first one hows micro code in the Q,A and in the 'lines' to the right. Notice that the Q to the right is a little over exposed, can just make out the 35


Below is a slightly improved image of the code in the Q especially. If you look closely at the section of the crossed lines, you should see that the thicker, lower section, is actually two lines stacked. Via my camera lens, I am able to make out that their are in fact two lines of code within the thicker line. A clearer image appears at the top of this page.

Not too bad an image of the letter C below. Again if you look closely you should see that it is in 2 separate sections with the upper section lying over the lower section. It could be that this was written at different times and just may be it wasn't a letter C in the first instance.




Still a little grainy and blurred but a huge improvement and more to come.











                                                                                    It has to be said that whoever took the pics of the code page and then later went over the 'indentations, knew full well what was really marked on the page.













LETTER M

A similar approach to developing the code page micro code was used on the torn piece, the images here are opf the second l;etter M in TAMAM

On the left is a close up with strong LED lighting, you can see the outline of what appears to be writing across the letter M.

On the right is the same image and here I have used some image editing tools to 'lift' the darker areas.







The method was to take the High-resolution image of the torn piece and then using the colour changer, highlight the darker areas observed under lighting. At this stage I am uncertain of the nature of these images and will spend more time reviewing them and others from the torn piece which show similar markings but in a different orientation.
