Somerton Man: Hidden in Plain Sight 2. Verse 70 The Dash and 70 revealed

Verse 70 from the Rubaiyat. Close up images showing micro letters/numbers in the dash and also in the number 70.

Images taken in Macro lens mode, backlight, surface light and some UV. Curves adjusted and minor adjustments to contrast.
You will need to focus carefully on the highlighted areas. Bear in mind that your monitor is displaying at around 100DPI whilst the printed version is around 300DPI. Printing the image will give you a clearer view.

The significance of these two images is the timing. The verse was written and handed to Alf Boxall by Jestyn in August 1945. This means that Jestyn would have been responsible for the tiny writing that you should be able to view within the highlighted areas.

The number 70 was according to accounts, not written until after the August 1978 TV interview with Stuart Littlemore, some 33 years later yet it to shows micro numbers as highlighted. You'll find that particular segment here at the 5 minutes and 7 seconds mark in the You Tube clip. You will see that the number 70 is not showing at the time of the interview thus it must have been added at a later time.

These micro letters and numbers are of the order of .4 mm in height and finely written perhaps with a special honed mapping pen. The size is perfectly achievable and is not, as some have suggested, on the edge of perception.

When we consider the smallest item the human eye can discern, it has been recorded at .012mm. Think in terms of a spider's web although it must be said it is the reflection of light from the web strands that we see. Generally it is accepted that the real figure is closer to twice that size or .025mm. The micro letters and numbers are 16 times that size.

  1. Hi Gordon, If the figure 70 was not written in the book in 1945-why write it in the 1970s and, more to the point, hide micro writing within? Can't see the logic. Clive

    1. Hi Clive,
I noticed this first some 4 years ago and I made a note calling it 'Alf's Little Joke'. Consider this, Alf was up against a smart man in Stuart Littlemore and he played him and everyone else along, an ego thing. He wrote the number 70 in and added his micro wiring knowing that no one was going to notice, except perhaps Jestyn, even though it was in plain sight. I hope to have some enlargements ready next week and will post them. Are you able to make out the detail on screen or have you printed it out? Happy to walk you through the process of taking these pics if you like. It certainly looks better when printed and also if you were to view it on a smart phone, very high res screens on most of them.

  2. Hi Gordon, I've printed copies and I can make out, what looks like figures? Taking Alf's "little secret" further, I can't help wondering if he and Jestyn were in contact with each other from the late 1940s up to 1995. It wouldn't surprise me. What does surprise me is that nobody else noticed the missing '70' from the time of Littlemore's interview. When did the '70' figure first appear, even the ink is different! Can't help but admire Alf for his 'addition' to the writing, I don't suppose Stuart is aware? In the interview, Alf comes across as unsure, hesitant but, when Stuart suggested the SM was a spy and Alf replies about it being a 'melodramatic thesis', Alf has a wry smile on his face and, it's at this stage you realize, well, I did anyway, that Alf had played his cards very well indeed. 3. Hi Clive, It is interesting and even more so when you consider that Derek had this book in his possession and even under the microscope without apparently finding anything and yet it is quite clear. If you put a backlight behind the paper that you have printed out and then take a close-up pic hopefully with a macro lens setting you'll find lots of examples throughout the verse. The 70 obviously occurred after the interview but just when I don't know. Also noticed that if you look very carefully, Jestyn's signature was covered up, that seems odd given that Littlemore actually mentioned that name earlier in the clip. I think Alf was a very experienced man and handled it very well. Anyway, big day ahead today, hope to load some images some time over the weekend. Do you see what I mean about 'Hidden in Plain Sight' ? Thanks for the comment!
