Somerton Man: Verse 70 revisited Jestyn's note to Alf Boxall

In response to a number of requests, here's the original Verse 70, Jestyn's notation in Alf Boxall's copy of the Rubaiyat. I have added all of the images taken, some of which you will see have been highlighted to show just where the micro writing is to be found. You should be able to note the 'whispy' appearance of the micro written characters, this is typical of lightly written letters of this size.
Original short image

Image showing figure of woman, this is the most recent image and shows sign of wear with less detail than the original image now visible.

Careful examination shows the outlines of micro writing within the ordinary letters, no enhancement here just oblique angles and lighting.

Comparison of the letter R from Verse 70 and the code page.  This was carefully executed and scaled such that they are both in the same ratio of size. You may note the outlines of micro letters within the code page 'R'

  1. Those 'R's do look quite similar.....Interesting to see them displayed together this way...great work.

    1. Thanks Jenny. I agree they're close in appearance. They're in the same aspect ratio, in other words they have not been altered in any way other than to bring them closer in overall size. I wouldn't say it's conclusive evidence, it's another piece of information that fits. Had I been investigating this I would certainly have raised that question with Jestyn, I am not sure that happened. then again it is certainly a detail that could innocently have been missed and in fact seems to have been. Good to have your feedback

  2. GC: Play the art critic will you please, with that image of a young, dark-haired, attractive woman in a tasselled fez and who calls herself by the code-name Jestyn - what do you think she was portraying herself as?

  3. You just kind of have to laugh at your obsession with micro letters...

What does it matter?! All you're showing is close up pictures of ink. If I wrote a letter claiming it to be from this case and took close up pictures you'd claim there was micro writing in there too!!

    1. I take it from your comments that you are an expert in Microwriting. The floor is yours, please go ahead and tell everyone exactly what your knowledge and experience is in this field and just how you feel that qualifies you to make this sort of comment. I look forward to your response.
