The Somerton Man Case. The body of a man found on an Australian beach close to a major Atomic Testing ground, he was probably poisoned, a copy of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam and an unbroken Code page found and associated to him. Set against a Cold War background in 1948, was this man a spy? Micro Calligraphy, extraordinary examples

Very often in these posts we talk of 'Micro Writing' and 'Micrography' as it relates to the Somerton Man case. One of the issues has been proving the likelihood of miniature writing being in use by Intelligence services and by default that also has meant following up on the history of this technology.

The Hebrew religion and others have made use of tiny and sometimes hidden writings in their artwork and, as in the case of the WW2 camps, 'ksivy' or small stones with tiny pieces of valuable paper with even tinier handwriting were thrown over fences between compounds and used by camp inmates to communicate with each other. Finding examples of 'ksivy' is difficult and in that regards the search goes on.

There other fine examples of Artwork and it is my belief that it is this skill that was noticed by the various intelligence services, picked up and used for their purposes.

In this post I would like to share some very fine examples of what is better known as 'Micro Calligraphy' it is based on Art works but it is not difficult to see how it could be used for other purposes. In this first image you should be able to to see how each and every detail is composed with micro writing, from the buildings, to the pathways to the timber structures, the sky and even the surrounds of the image, each is made up of the written word. It is a particularly fine example especially when you consider that the writing is in cursive style.

The owner of this and other similar images has informed me that they are in fact written on a Papier Mache base and, whilst at first he thought they were an engraving, he now believes that may not be the case and that they are in fact hand drawn.

From the perspective of the intelligence services you can see quite clearly how letters, numbers and codes could be written and cleverly hidden using the techniques of the artist. Notice the use of shade and how some writing is paler than others, see how the timber structure is used such that the wording looks like no more than natural shading and perhaps wood grain effects.Even the surrounding edge from a point approximately 1/3rd of the way up the left side of the image around to a point about 1/3rd of the way down the its right side is in fact micro writing. The question is, if this artist could do this in the 19th Century, where did they get the techniques from and how would it have progressed into the 20th Century? For the record this image is just 60mm in height, that makes the individual letters no more than .5mm and very probably less in height. In fact in the case of the writings within the sky area that writing is closer to height.

In the example below is a close up of some of the writing from this art work. It is so extraordinarily well executed, tightly packed and, again, perfectly executed. It does give you cause to wonder whether the artist was engaged in a profession that made use of the technique and if being an Artists was their full time occupation then where are other examples of their work?
